Haunted Blog...

This story started in the pages of Showcase Magazine and is being serialized in this blog. The latest entry is at the end of this page...

I have started this blog to inform others of the dangers of dabbling with the occult. I will update it regularly and let me warn you it will be unedited. There are not earthly explanations for the things that started happening and are still happening to Jess and myself after the night of June 14, 2005. I know some of will probably wonder how in the world can I remember these dates. Well, after the freaky events of June 17, I secretly started keeping a journal. -William

Hi, and welcome to my little space on the vastness that is the world wide web. I bet you're wondering why you stumbled onto my page. A little background is in order. My name is William Pointer. I am a 25 year old single male but I do have a girlfriend. Nice to meet you.Being born under the sign of Scorpio, I have always had a fascination with the occult and the paranormal. Growing up I don't think there was a horror movie that slipped by me. I also took a liking to the writings of Aleister Crowley. I remember going "ghost hunting" on fall weekends. Nothing seemed to scare me.

Someone brought a Ouija board to a friend's house one evening and of course we had to test drive it. I was around 14 or 15. A mean old neighbor lady had passed away earlier that year. We figured what better spirit to contact than that of a mean old lady. Anyway, the oracle seemed to be moving so we decided to ask for a sign of her presence. As soon as we asked that question the phone rang. It was static on the other end. We were spooked. After the initial spook the Ouija never seemed to work again but the guy that brought the board refused to take it back. So I kept it all these years. This brings me to June 14 of last year.

I was cleaning out the closet in my spare bedroom so that my girlfriend could have a place to put her things. As all men know there can never be enough room for a woman's shoes. Why do they need so many? OK, that's another blog. Anyway, I was taking a few things to the attic when I stumbled upon the old Ouija board. My first thought was that night and I have to admit an eerie feeling came over me thinking about that phone ringing. Shaking it off, I thought it would be cool to scare my girlfriend when she came over. So I brought the Ouija board downstairs with me. It was dusty and I cleaned it off and sat it on the coffee table in hopes of freaking her out when she came over.

Jess had come to stay with me on the 14th for the remainder of the week. On Friday morning around 3:30 in the morning, I woke up and she wasn't in bed. My instincts sent me out of the bed to see if there was anything wrong.

I walked down stairs calling her name, softly at first then gradually getting louder, almost to the point of a scream when she did not answer. There was an eerie glow coming from the living room. Half asleep, I still had no idea what it was but it looked ominous. It turned out that it was just a candle. I walked into the living room and there sat Jess in the floor, legs crossed, seemingly entranced...in front of her the Ouija board. I said “Jess what are you doing?” She didn’t answer. The Ouija board had her complete undivided attention. I asked her again, and no response. So I shook her just a little and she looked up at me with the strangest expression. I will never forget it. It was one of those looks that someone gives you when you wake them from a deep sleep, but there was just something strange in her eyes. It's impossible to recreate in words.

Saturday was a beautiful day. Earlier in the week we had planned on going to the park to picnic. I could tell that Jess really didn’t want to go because she was too enthralled in the mystery surrounding Mrs. Williamson. But, I persuaded her to go the park anyway. The whole time there I knew she was thinking about what had happened. How could she not? Coming face to face with the paranormal isn't something you just shrug off. If you fear it, it's a fear come true and if you embrace it, it's like hitting the lottery.

Jess left to go back to school on June 20. We were unsuccessful in finding any information that may lead to the whereabouts of Mrs. Williamson’s daughter. All contact ceased after I apologized. It was almost as if the apology provided enough comfort for Mrs. Williamson to rest peacefully. I had this uneasy feeling that things weren’t that simple. Your life changes when you have a true encounter with something paranormal. If you are a skeptic, a touch from the unknown just disproves any theories that you may have had about the paranormal. As I have said earlier if you are a believer and you come face to face with something not of this earth that reassures you that your beliefs are not in vain. Either skeptic or believer a portion of innocence is lost when unearthly occurrences introduce themselves into your life.

Everything seemed to return to normal after the night that Jess and I could not contact each other. Jess seemed to gear her attentions more toward the coming school term and away from Mrs. Williamson. I have to say, I met this with a sigh of relief. Her sudden personality change really did have me worried that she may have been allowing herself to get too close to the unknown.

Things became pretty quiet after that night that Jess encountered Mrs. Williamson. There was the occasional odd occurrence such as a picture falling over or a strange noise. Nothing like we had experienced right after the incident with the Ouija board so I just chalked it up to the cat playing. Jess was not visited again and her attention had returned to her job and summer school.

It felt like someone had taken all of the breath out of my lungs after Jeffrey's revelation about Mrs. Williamson's daughter. Jess had the look of sitting at the peak of a roller coaster about to plunge to the bottom. I could tell she felt the same way. She said that she didn't feel well and wanted to go home. Quite frankly, if she had not said that I would have. The atmosphere had suddenly changed from jovial to somber.

The doctor thought it would be a good idea to keep Jess a few days for observation. She had a mild concussion. She also started having headaches. Her parents stayed with her, I had to travel back home due to a meeting that could not be postponed.

On the evening of the 6th, I called the hospital to check on Jess and spoke with her mother. She asked me if Jess had been having nightmares lately. Her mother said that Jess had been talking about a Mrs. Williamson in her sleep. Jess would start crying and saying something similar to “I didn’t mean to hurt you” in her sleep. I felt sick to my stomach when I heard this, but I assured her mother that it must have been a side effect of the concussion.

For the next few weeks things were pretty quiet. Jess had recovered from the accident. I decided to wait to tell her about the conversation with Cassandra. She was finishing up some projects for school and I did not want to add more clutter to her mind. I didn’t want to confront this new knowledge myself. I figured maybe if I blocked it out that it would go away. It seemed to work. There had been no strange noises other than the clumsy cat knocking the occasional thing over.

Needless to say there was no rest for me after the dark figure disappeared. I laid there in fear until the alarm went off at 6 AM. I welcomed the sunlight like never before. It brought a warm, calming peace over the room. Once out of bed, I decided to block out the previous night’s events and look forward to the beach trip. It’s much easier than you think to block out a traumatic experience. The mind has a way of shutting off the things you just can not face.

Thursday morning I said my goodbyes and headed home. It was a beautiful day right up until I drove into town. As soon as I hit the city limits, the flood gates opened. I pulled into the driveway and sat there for a few moments hoping the rain would let up. There was no end in sight. I sucked it up, opened the door and ran as a fast as I could to the porch. As soon as I stepped foot onto the porch I felt this feeling come over me as if I were being smothered. I could not catch my breath. “I need to start exercising again” I told myself.

I walked around in a stupor for the next few days. I really started to think that I was going mad. My mind felt like it had turned to mush. I was exhausted but nothing else significant had happened since I found the bible. It was almost as if some supreme being had interceded and taking control of the downward spiraling situation. Even though I was still exhausted I had been sleeping peaceful until 3 AM on August 7th.

For the next few days I lived in overwhelming fear. It seemed as every evening something diabolical was happening in my house. The old man had become a regular nightly visitor. He would appear in the corner of the bedroom. Only he would not speak, he would open his mouth as if to scream but nothing would come out. Then he would vanish. Moans would echo down the hallway like those of a lost explorer in a cavern.

August 13, 2005 (Part 2)

We went to bed at around midnight after finishing up a movie. I was out like a light, my house hadn’t felt safe in a long time, but with Jess there I actually felt safe. I woke up at 2:58 in the morning to find the bed empty. I sprung up as if I were late for work. I rushed down the hall calling for Jess. I was stopped dead in my tracks by what I can only describe as an invisible wall. Jess was sitting in the living at the coffee table with the Ouija board in front of her. The lamp was giving of an eerie glow that mimicked flames dancing around her. I called out to her again. She never looked up. I could see her hands moving on the oracle.

Jess sat at the kitchen table with a look that mirrored a mixture of befuddlement and terror as I attended to her knees. The bleeding stopped and I sat in the chair next to her. She said with teary eyes “what the hell is going on?”

I barely pulled into the driveway. Jumping out of the car I raced to the front door, leaving breakfast in the car. Jess was sitting, shaking feverishly on the couch wearing nothing but a towel, clutching an open bible. She was still soaking wet from her shower. I ran over to her. Jess was in shock, she looked up at me saying something had happened to her in the shower. With her voice shaking, she went on to tell me that something had attacked her in the shower. She was showering when the curtain slowly pulled back, before she had time to react something violently entered her body, knocking her to the floor of the tub. It felt as if my heart had stopped, hearing that. Jess said she sprung right up and fell out of the tub taking the shower curtain with her. Sitting on the toilet was a bible opened to Act 16:16. I took the bible from her hands and read…

Jess was like a zombie for the rest of that Saturday. There was nothing that I could do to comfort her. It felt as if I was on a seesaw of emotions. One moment I felt completely helpless for not being able to protect her and the next I felt utter rage toward whatever it was that had violated Jess. I was literally going insane.

The ride to the church was uneventful. By this time I was completely perplexed. I had psyched myself up to take on whatever the unholy force catapulted in my direction, but again nothing. I did not let my guard down, I kept thinking of that old saying “expect it when you least expect”.

Once in his office, I let Jess do all of the talking. She began to explain to him the events from the moment she first touched the Ouija board to the attack. By the expression on his face you could tell that he was displeased with our curiosity with the occult. But that shouldn’t come as a surprise. What did shock me was the fact that he did not seem surprised by the occurrences. I had expected him to attempt to dispel the events by attributing them to our imagination. He did not, he knew that this evil was very real and that good had to intervene. Father Vicks agreed to come and bless the house later that afternoon.
